Bianca Andreescu gives Nike a dressing down at US Open before issuing apology to company, team
While there were more than a few highlights at the US Open over the past few days, most of them came courtesy of the athletes on court. However, there may have been one athlete who missed out the most. Bianca Andreescu missed out on the opportunity to play against Serena Williams in the championship match of the fourth round.
Andreescu was supposed to face Williams on Saturday, but after her last-32 defeat to eventual champion Simona Halep, she had to pull out due to a back injury. It was, as her coach, Ivan Ljubicic Jr., noted, her “last-resort” match and a “gut check” was required.
Despite her injury, Andreescu did not give up on her career. She told her coach through text messages that she “didn’t want to retire. I just wanted to keep playing.”
Williams, who played on-and-off with Andreescu throughout the final stages of her career and her brief stint as a tennis star, was not about to be deterred. She made it clear with her Instagram post that she is a fan of the former pro and called Andreescu and her parents to thank them for their support. The former No. 1 player said she would be rooting for Andreescu to make it through the remainder of her career.
“Congrats Bianca, on your last-resort, gut check match against Serena. I hope you make it through,” Williams wrote. “I hope she can play on for many years to come! You’re one of the best.”
The two will be taking to court again next year.
In the meantime, Andreescu issued an apology to Nike and her coaches for the “disrespect and humiliation” she was forced to endure at the US Open.
