The day Roger Federer couldn’t stop laughing at CNN correspondent David Smith – and it was a real problem for the tennis star, because he was having a great year.

David Smith took over from a star-struck Serena Williams on Tuesday after she walked off the court with her head down and left the All England Club in person, not long after the US Open.

With Williams unable or unwilling to engage in lengthy interviews with Smith, Federer had to be the one to deliver the final shot of the day, just as he is all the time, and he did a great job at making Smith laugh.

‘I’ll always be a fan and a media enthusiast’, Federer said after watching one of our interview videos. ‘I’ll go out of my way to read an interview and I’ll find it interesting. But of the ones who ask me questions, I will always look forward to seeing an interview with Serena.’

Smith asked Federer to elaborate on what it was like to play alongside Williams, who entered this year’s US Open ranked No 1 but then abruptly left the tournament last week with a right knee injury.
